Increased production often means more wastewater and consequently more sludge requiring dewatering. As the load on a wastewater treatment plant grows, the capacity of the equipment used in the dewatering process may eventually need to be increased.
With MDQ Multi-Disc Screw Presses, however, this does not necessarily mean replacing the existing press with a larger model. Thanks to their modular design, capacity can be increased by adding additional dewatering drums. This allows an existing press to be adapted to the facility’s changing needs without rebuilding the entire installation.
MDQ Multi-Disc Screw Press at Márka Üdítőgyártó Kft.
A practical example of the benefits of the MDQ’s modular design is a project completed for Márka Üdítőgyártó Kft., one of the oldest soft drink manufacturers in Hungary.
In 2021, together with our Hungarian partner Ekoszvít Center Kft., we supplied and commissioned an MDQ Multi-Disc Screw Press at the company’s on-site wastewater treatment plant. Over the following years, the press operated at a capacity that met the plant’s needs at the time.
As production gradually increased, the plant began generating more process wastewater and consequently more sludge requiring dewatering. This created the need to increase the capacity of the dewatering process.
Expanding the existing MDQ Screw Press (ESMIL-Tsurumi)
In 2026, ESMIL was asked to adapt the press to meet the plant’s growing needs. Thanks to the modular design of the MDQ dewatering press, the existing unit could be expanded without replacing it with a larger model or rebuilding the installation.
The scope of work included:
- Manufacturing and installing an additional dewatering drum
- Adding an additional connection to the mixing tank
- Modifying the control panel and control software
All work was completed in just 2 working days. Once the upgrade was completed and the press restarted, its dewatering capacity had doubled, meeting the plant’s current requirements.

Modular design of the MDQ dehydrator – greater flexibility during investment and operation
The ability to expand the press provides greater flexibility both when designing the installation and during its subsequent operation. The MDQ Multi-Disc Screw Press (ESMIL–Tsurumi) can be sized according to the facility’s current needs, with the option to increase its capacity in the future if the amount of sludge requiring dewatering grows.
This provides:
- The ability to increase capacity as the plant grows – by adding additional dewatering drums to the existing press
- Lower initial capital expenditure – without having to oversize the equipment to accommodate potential future increases in load
- Greater flexibility when planning future expansion – dewatering capacity can be increased when the need actually arises
- The ability to adapt the same dewatering press to changing facility requirements – without replacing the entire unit with a larger model
