Commissioning of the equipment supplied for the second phase of the KOS-2 wastewater treatment plant expansion in Aktau, western Kazakhstan, is nearing completion.
For this project, ESMIL Group supplied equipment for several key treatment processes, including grit removal, primary sedimentation, sludge thickening and flow control. The second phase of the expansion will increase the plant’s treatment capacity by a further 40,000 m³/day.
ESMIL Group contributes to the wastewater treatment plant expansion in Aktau
Wastewater treatment in Aktau has a history spanning more than 50 years. In 1971, the KOS-1 wastewater treatment plant was commissioned with a design capacity of 72,000 m³/day. Over time, however, ageing equipment and treatment infrastructure led to a decline in its actual treatment capacity.
As the city’s sewerage network expanded, a decision was made to build a new wastewater treatment plant, KOS-2. The project was divided into two phases.
The first phase provided an additional treatment capacity of 30,000 m³/day. In 2016, ESMIL contributed to this phase by manufacturing and supplying two radial suction scrapers for 30 m diameter secondary clarifiers and two picket scrapers for sludge thickening.
The second phase of the KOS-2 expansion, now in the final stages of commissioning, will increase the plant’s treatment capacity by a further 40,000 m³/day.
ESMIL equipment supplied for the second phase of the KOS-2 expansion
As part of the second phase, ESMIL Group manufactured and supplied:
- 2 tangiental flow grit chambers
- 2 radial suction scrapers for primary clarifiers
- 2 picket scrapers for radial sludge thickeners
- Channel-mounted penstocks
The supplied equipment supports several essential wastewater treatment and sludge handling processes.
During preliminary treatment, tangiental flow grit chambers remove sand and other heavy mineral particles from wastewater, helping protect downstream equipment against excessive wear.
In the primary clarifiers, radial suction scrapers collect and remove sludge accumulated at the bottom of the tanks, enabling uniform sludge removal and supporting stable sedimentation.
During sludge treatment, picket scrapers promote uniform mixing of sludge in radial thickeners, helping maintain a stable thickening process.
Channel-mounted penstocks are used to regulate or isolate process flows, allowing individual sections of the plant to be controlled during operation and maintenance.
The equipment for the second phase of KOS-2 was supplied in cooperation with ESMIL Group’s regional partner, Su Arnasy-Service Ltd.
Second phase of the KOS-2 expansion nearing completion
ESMIL equipment is currently undergoing final adjustments and commissioning as part of the second phase of the KOS-2 wastewater treatment plant.
Once this phase is commissioned, the plant’s total treatment capacity will reach 70,000 m³/day. The additional capacity will provide greater flexibility for the city’s wastewater infrastructure and help meet the needs of Aktau as it continues to develop.
ESMIL Group’s involvement in another phase of the KOS-2 project reflects its long-standing presence in the Kazakhstani market. Returning to the same facility for a further expansion highlights the value of long-term partnerships and ESMIL’s experience in supplying equipment for municipal wastewater treatment plants.
