Four ESMIL catenary screens to protect the Al-Khadraa pumping station in Baghdad

ESMIL has completed the design and manufacture of four KR catenary screens, each over 12 metres high, for the Al-Khadraa wastewater pumping station in Baghdad. The supplied equipment is designed to remove solid debris from wastewater, protecting the pumps from damage and ensuring reliable operation before the wastewater is conveyed to the municipal wastewater treatment plant.

The size of the equipment was only one of the challenges of this project. The design had to take into account both the operating conditions of the pumping station and the requirements associated with transporting and installing the screens on site. As a result, the solution was developed not only to meet the process requirements, but also to facilitate efficient transportation and installation.

The project was delivered for Al-Madeena Al-Modawara for General Trading (Circular City Ltd.), a company involved in the modernisation of the pumping station.

Selection of mechanical screens to meet the pumping station operating conditions

The project required the selection of mechanical screens specifically matched to the operating conditions of the pumping station. The units were to be installed in a channel 1.9 m wide and 4.45 m deep, with a total installation depth of 12.25 m (from the channel bottom to the operating platform). This required the efficient transport of screenings over a considerable height while maintaining a high hydraulic capacity.

Following an analysis of the operating conditions and the facility’s technical documentation, ESMIL engineers selected the KR 18106.50 catenary screens, whose design enables reliable operation under the high flow rates and heavy solids loading typical of this type of pumping station.

Key equipment parameters

  • Bar spacing: 50 mm
  • Maximum flow capacity per screen: 4,140 m³/h
  • Material: AISI 304 stainless steel

Segmented design simplifies transportation and installation

One of the project’s key challenges was the size of the equipment. With an installation height exceeding 12 metres, transportation and installation had to be considered from the earliest design stage.

To address these requirements, the screens were manufactured in a segmented design, simplifying transportation, facilitating on-site assembly and improving the efficiency of the installation works.

Delivery and installation of ESMIL catenary screens at the Al-Khadraa pumping station

Following successful factory acceptance tests at the ESMIL production facility, the four KR catenary screens were delivered to the Al-Khadraa pumping station in Baghdad. Installation was carried out by Al-Madeena Al-Modawara for General Trading (Circular City Ltd.), the contractor responsible for the modernisation works at the facility.

Summary

At ESMIL, every project begins with a detailed analysis of the facility’s operating conditions. Based on this analysis, we select and design a solution tailored to the actual requirements of the application.

For the Al-Khadraa pumping station, this approach resulted in the development of more than 12-metre-high catenary screens that met the process requirements while also addressing the practical challenges associated with transporting and installing equipment of this size.
